NICO & MICHAEL GET BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX PRACTICE UNDERWAY
http://www.mercedes-gp.com
Posted: Friday 12 March 2010 at 13:36

The first practice sessions for the 2010 Formula One season got underway today in the searing heat of the desert at the Bahrain International Circuit. Taking to the track in the new Silver Arrows cars, the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS pairing of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher began their preparations for the first Grand Prix of the season.

The ninety-minute morning session gave both drivers the opportunity to try out the revised circuit layout with its eight new corners for the first time as they completed initial installation and set-up work on the MGP W01 cars. With both drivers experiencing some balance issues, the team worked hard on the solutions during the break and enjoyed a more positive second session, focusing on further set-up developments and tyre comparisons over runs of varying length.

Nico completed 38 laps over the course of the two sessions, setting a quickest time of 1:55.409 to top the timesheets. Michael completed 39 laps with a quickest time of 1:55.903 and finished in third position.

The pair will be back in action tomorrow morning for the final practice hour before qualifying begins at 14:00 local time.

NICO ROSBERG
“We improved the car over the course of the day but it didn’t feel great initially with the new track, lower downforce and the conditions were very sandy this morning. So we had a few balance issues to work on but it came together very well this afternoon. There are areas where we can still improve but we have a good comparison with the tyre compounds and on the long runs. Overall we learnt a great deal today so it’s a positive start to the weekend.”

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER
“We worked very well this afternoon after having a few issues with the balance this morning. The car felt much better in the second session although I am still a little rusty on one lap runs and need to get back into the routine. On the long runs, the car felt good and once you get into the rhythm, it feels very natural. I’m happy with our work today and feeling ready for the weekend.”

ROSS BRAWN
“After the development and testing work over the winter months, it was good to see the cars in action here in Bahrain today. We worked well to overcome some initial balance concerns which Nico and Michael experienced and achieved some very valuable work this afternoon. I feel we still need to make some progress so we need to wait and see how we will match up to our competitors when qualifying gets underway tomorrow.”

NORBERT HAUG
"The afternoon session went better than the first one this morning. We ran through our planned programme and the team, Nico and Michael got a good understanding of the two different tyre compounds. It looks like we are heading in the right direction but it is definitely too early to say how everybody will perform in tomorrows first qualifying session of the new season and on Sunday during the race. I expect very strong competitors."

Bahrain GP: Mercedes race report
http://www.motorsport.com

Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher brought their MERCEDES GP PETRONAS cars home in fifth and sixth positions respectively at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix today.

Starting on the option tyres from fifth on the grid, Nico had a great start to overtake Lewis Hamilton into turn six to move up to fourth. Michael, starting from seventh on the grid, was running in sixth and also using the softer rubber.

The pair made only one stop during the race, Michael on lap 15 and Nico on lap 16, to switch to the prime tyres. Nico lost a position to Hamilton at the stops and they remained in fifth and sixth positions for the remainder of the 49-lap race. Nico chased down Sebastian Vettel at the end of the race but was unable to pass in the turbulent air.

Today's result puts MERCEDES GP PETRONAS in third position in the Constructors' Championship with 18 points.

Nico Rosberg:

"I had a great start today and was happy to be running in fourth position by the end of the first lap. However I lacked pace on the option tyres in the first stint and struggled for pace. Lewis beat me on strategy in the pit stop which we need to analyse later and see what happened. I couldn't quite get Sebastian at the end as I lost grip in the dirty air when I got close. However fifth place is a good start for us and I am confident that we can develop well from here."

Michael Schumacher:

"After three years away, I'm happy to say that I had fun out there today, especially at the beginning with the good start that I had. I can live very well with sixth position and it gives both me and the team a good base to make progress. I have every confidence that we will improve the car. Working with the team for our first race together was very positive and the guys did a great job so I would like to thank them for their support in my comeback race. We all know that we have some way to go but we will get there. The season is long."

Ross Brawn:

"Nico and Michael did a great job this weekend to finish in fifth and sixth positions and now we need to give them the car to improve on those placings. We were not quick enough today and our race pace was not there to finish further up the field and challenge for a podium position. We have some hard work ahead but I am confident that we can progress the car strongly in the next few races. The team performed extremely well this weekend and for our first race with our two new drivers, we achieved two strong points-scoring finishes."

Norbert Haug:

"It was a difficult race weekend for our team with these extremely hot conditions in Manama. We looked better in the practice sessions than during the race and it appears that we could not handle the tyres as well as the teams ahead of us. Fifth position for Nico and sixth place for Michael was the best possible result today. We have some work to do and we are confident that we will catch up soon."

http://www.motorsport.com

The MERCEDES GP PETRONAS cars of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher and team-mate Nico Rosberg will carry the Laureus logo throughout the 2010 Formula One World Championship.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation uses sport to improve the lives of young people around the world.

The logo made its debut on the cars in Bahrain and will be carried throughout the season which will end on 14 November in Abu Dhabi, the city which hosted the 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards. Michael Schumacher was honoured with the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in 2002 and 2004.

Boris Becker, Vice-Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy said: "I am a big fan of motorsport and especially of Mercedes-Benz. I think it is great that Laureus and MERCEDES GP PETRONAS will be working together. This is a good signal that will be recognised worldwide and I sincerely hope that this will make even more people want to find out about the work that Laureus is doing to support children through the use of sport."

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation uses the power of sport to address social challenges through a worldwide programme of sports-related community development initiatives. Currently Laureus supports 78 projects around the world which have helped to improve the lives of over one million young people.

Boris Becker and Mika Hakkinen, both Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, were present at the Bahrain Grand Prix today to support the initiative.

Fry relaxed about Schumacher's form
http://www.autosport.com

Michael Schumacher, Mercedes, Sakhir 2010Mercedes GP CEO Nick Fry says the team sees no reason to suggest that Michael Schumacher is having trouble adapting to the current generation of Formula 1 cars and tyres, and reckons it is just a matter of Mercedes improving its pace to allow the drivers to start winning.

Schumacher made a low-key return to F1 last weekend with seventh place on the grid and sixth at the finish. He was slightly slower than team-mate Nico Rosberg throughout the weekend.

Fry denied suggestions that Schumacher was finding the 2010 front tyres ill-suited to his driving style.

"Listening to the discussions that are going on within the team, I don't actually detect any great difference in feedback between him and Nico," said Fry.

"I think they both know what they want to do to improve the car, and I think they are consistent in their views. There is nothing I have heard that is particular to Michael. But the encouraging thing is that they have got a to do list."

But Fry did reserve special praise for how well Rosberg had coped with the challenge of partnering Schumacher.
"I have been incredibly impressed with Nico's approach right from the moment that he knew Michael was joining the team," he said.

"It doesn't seem ever to have particularly fazed him. He has taken it in his stride and although sometimes the focus is on Michael, it doesn't seem to perturb him whatsoever. He has got on and done his job. He has proven again how quick he is, and I think he will continue to improve."

Fry is confident that the combination of Rosberg, Schumacher and team boss Ross Brawn will ensure that Mercedes swiftly closes the slight gap to the leaders.

"Ross sees that there were a lot of areas where we could work with Nico to not only improve the car, but also improve his personal performance," said Fry.

"I am very encouraged. I think it is a good team, the drivers seem to work together well and I think we are going away from [Bahrain] knowing we have work to do but far from downhearted. We have plenty of upside potential and that is what counts.

"It is going to be a long old year, and I absolutely believe that we have the people, and the equipment under Ross's guidance to come out of this very well at the end of the year."

Mercedes denies it didn't want to supply Red Bull
http://www.motorsport.com
http://charlescarservice.com/mercedes-logo.gif

Mercedes has denied Helmut Marko's claim the German marque "didn't want" to supply Red Bull with engines in 2010.

Dr Marko, the motor sport advisor to Dietrich Mateschitz, said this week that Mercedes rejected Red Bull's approaches because "they knew that if we had that engine, they wouldn't see us (on the track)".

But a Mercedes spokesman told the Cologne newspaper Express: "McLaren was (our) exclusive partner and did not agree.

"Mercedes would have leased its engine to Red Bull, and these facts are well known to Red Bull," the spokesman added.

The spokesman also rejected Austrian former GP driver Marko's claim that Mercedes has eked out an unfair engine advantage despite the freeze on performance development.

"Everything that our engineers do is strictly in conformity with the regulations and with the knowledge of the FIA. The FIA would gladly confirm this," he added.

Mercedes not competitive enough says Brawn
http://www.gpupdate.net

According to Mercedes Grand Prix team boss Ross Brawn the team is not competitive enough to fight for the F1 championship. The Briton is realistic as he looks ahead to Melbourne as he admits there the team has work to do in order to close the gap to the leaders.

"The team did a good job in Bahrain but we accept that we were not competitive enough and that we have work to do to close the gap to the leaders," Brawn said. "I was very pleased with the performance of Nico (Rosberg) and Michael (Schumacher) and the way that they worked together to provide clear and consistent feedback to develop the car over the weekend.

"Whilst our car is fundamentally strong, we have a development plan in place for the next few races which should bring the required performance improvements to compete at the front. Looking ahead to the next two races, the Australian Grand Prix is always a popular race with the teams and the fans so we hope to see a more exciting race at Albert Park next weekend."

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/09t89vc5RJ2TD/610x.jpg

The second race of the 2010 Formula One season will take place in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday 28 March. Albert Park, a street circuit which uses the public roads surrounding the man-made Albert Park lake just south of Melbourne city centre, hosts the Australian Grand Prix which is always one of the most atmospheric races on the calendar.

NICO ROSBERG
“The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne has always been a successful race for me. I have been in the points for my last three races and had my first podium finish there in 2008 when I finished third. Melbourne is a great city so I really enjoy visiting and the Albert Park street circuit is exciting. It’s quite a challenging track as the public roads are always dirty to begin with and there are a lot of bumps to negotiate. With the change in the time of the race last year, the low sun was one of the most difficult things due to the late afternoon start.”

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER
“Australia has always been one of the highlights on the Formula One calendar and this has never changed for me in all my years of competing. As in previous times, I arrived on the continent quite early and have spent some nice days training, adapting and relaxing in order to be fit and rested for the race weekend. I have a lot of good memories from Melbourne and most of the time, we saw interesting races there. I am very happy with the outcome of the season opener in Bahrain. Sixth position was good for me, especially considering how few times I have driven an F1 car since my retirement. I am sure that Melbourne will help me to get into the rhythm even more and I am looking forward to it.”

ROSS BRAWN
“The team did a good job in Bahrain but we accept that we were not competitive enough and that we have work to do to close the gap to the leaders. I was very pleased with the performance of Nico and Michael and the way that they worked together to provide clear and consistent feedback to develop the car over the weekend. Whilst our car is fundamentally strong, we have a development plan in place for the next few races which should bring the required performance improvements to compete at the front. Looking ahead to the next two races, the Australian Grand Prix is always a popular race with the teams and the fans so we hope to see a more exciting race at Albert Park next weekend. We then head to Malaysia for the home race of our title partner PETRONAS. With an exciting programme of activities scheduled at the PETRONAS Pit Pulse fan zone in Kuala Lumpur, it will be a busy and enjoyable fortnight for the team.”

NORBERT HAUG
“The forthcoming Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park is the first of two races within eight days. The layout of the traditional race track in Melbourne, which will host its 15th Formula One World Championship race since 1996, is quite different to Bahrain where the season-opener took place. I expect quite a challenging race for us. The base of our car is good and the team is working hard and focused to achieve the next development steps. It will take some time to close the gap but we will definitely close it sooner rather than later. Our spirit is first-class and the whole team is looking forward to the race weekend in Melbourne.”

Brawn confident Mercedes will catch up
http://www.autosport.com
http://cdn.images.autosport.com/editorial/1268487737.jpg

Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, Bahrain 2010Mercedes GP team boss Ross Brawn is adamant the German squad will be fighting at the front soon thanks to its development plan.

The team was off the pace of the leading outfits at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, where Nico Rosberg finished in fifth position ahead of team-mate Michael Schumacher.

Brawn conceded Mercedes was still lacking pace compared to its main rivals, but is confident the team can make progress and catch up in the upcoming races.

"The team did a good job in Bahrain but we accept that we were not competitive enough and that we have work to do to close the gap to the leaders," said Brawn in a team preview ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

"I was very pleased with the performance of Nico and Michael and the way that they worked together to provide clear and consistent feedback to develop the car over the weekend.

"Whilst our car is fundamentally strong, we have a development plan in place for the next few races which should bring the required performance improvements to compete at the front."

Schumacher, meanwhile, said he is looking forward to the Melbourne race to continue with his acclimatisation following his comeback after three years.

"I am very happy with the outcome of the season opener in Bahrain. Sixth position was good for me, especially considering how few times I have driven an F1 car since my retirement.

"I am sure that Melbourne will help me to get into the rhythm even more and I am looking forward to it.""
