Mercedes takes over Brawn
http://www.autopsort.com

The Mercedes F1 carMercedes-Benz has announced that it has taken over the Brawn Formula 1 team and re-named it Mercedes Grand Prix after buying a 75.1 per cent stake in the squad.

The German car giant will retain its role as McLaren's engine supplier until at least 2015, but will sell its 40 per cent stake in the squad back to the team over the next two years.

"Mercedes will compete in the F1 world championship next year starting with its own factory team," said head of Mercedes cars, Dr Dieter Zetsche.

"This is possible by the agreed acquisition of 75.1 per cent of Brawn GP, 45.1 per cent from Daimler and 30 per cent from our partner Aabar Investments. The rest will be with the current share - Ross Brawn, Nick Fry and other members. The interests of Daimler are aligned therefore it will be a true Mercedes-Benz team.

"Ross Brawn will continue to be the team principal and thereby we are maintaining his strength. Just like the engine team at Mercedes Benz High Performance Engines, the new Mercedes Benz grand prix team will be co-ordinated by Mercedes Benz Motorsport which is as everybody knows headed by Norbert Haug."

Neither driver has yet been announced for the new squad. 2009 Brawn driver Rubens Barrichello has already joined Williams for next season while Jenson Button has yet to decide on his future.

What The Papers Say About Merc Take-Over
http://www.planetf1.com

Fleet Street are hailing Mercedes' take-over of Brawn GP as an astute piece of business for both parties and a sign that Formula One is not in doldrums...

'The commentators who were quick to give Formula One a good kicking following the recent withdrawal of Toyota ought to - but probably won't - apply the same zeal in a more positive manner following the acquisition of 75.1% of Brawn Grand Prix by Mercedes-Benz. If ever there was a vote of confidence in the immediate future of the sport, then this is it.

'There have already been one or two observers seizing on the fact Mercedes has only said it "could" continue to supply McLaren, its erstwhile long-standing partner, with engines until 2015 but if that is the height of the disaster, then Formula One is in reasonable shape in these straitened times.

'Daimler AG, owners of the Mercedes-Benz brand, could have walked away from Formula One without a backward look after 15 years, three drivers' world championships and 60 wins with McLaren. It has been an outstanding relationship that could easily have been terminated by either the downturn in car sales - which has hurt Mercedes just as severely as BMW, Toyota and Honda - or, more likely, by McLaren's plans to market a high-performance road car in direct competition with the top of the range Mercedes. That was reportedly as badly received in Stuttgart as the news in January 2007 that McLaren had successfully offered 30% of the company to a Middle East consortium.

'The German firm now has what it wanted: a Mercedes Formula One car from stem to stern; a return to the Silver Arrows in the tradition of the all-conquering cars of the 1930s and 1950s. The caveat about motor manufacturers having boards of directors capable of cancelling the Formula One budget at a stroke of a pen still applies but Daimler AG would be unlikely to invest so heavily in Brawn if there is a nagging doubt that the plug might need pulling in 18 months or two years.' - Maurice Hamilton, The Guardian

'This represents a major power shift in Formula One. This takeover is going to turn the Brawn team into a long-term major player to rank alongside McLaren and Ferrari. With the history and commitment of Mercedes-Benz behind them they are going to be a team to be reckoned with for years to come. I expect them to be extremely ambitious in terms of winning races and ultimately championships.

'The impact of this will be felt almost immediately, certainly by the start of next season. Next season's cars are going to be a return to the Silver Arrows of the past and by having this huge company take over the reins at Brawn, it will give the team confidence for its future. The takeover will help Brawn improve its strategic planning and advance its ability to make the most out of every challenge it faces.

'In the long run the team will be looking to hire the very best drivers. It will come as no surprise to see the likes of Sebastian Vettel in a Mercedes car in 2012 and maybe even Lewis Hamilton could end up there, although Ferrari is another long-term option for Lewis. ' - Edward Gorman, The Times

'While Mercedes' takeover of Brawn might seem a gamble in the current climate, with the automotive sector on its knees and other car-makers such as Honda, Toyota and BMW fleeing F1 like rats off a sinking ship, it was in the end almost a no-brainer for the German manufacturer.

'On a financial level, the risk is less acute than one might imagine. The deal, reported to be worth £110 million, is being funded almost exclusively by an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. Of the 75.1 per cent of the team sold by Brawn, Mercedes' parent company, Daimler, is taking a 45 per cent stake and Aabar is shelling out directly for 30 per cent.

'However, Aabar - part of the IPIC sovereign fund run by Sheikh Mansour of Manchester City fame - has simultaneously expressed an intention to increase its stake in Daimler from nine to 15 per cent. In other words, it appears to be bankrolling the entire deal.

'Sure, Mercedes could have stayed wedded to McLaren and won many more world titles but it would not have done so on its own terms; with German drivers at a full Mercedes works team. This is a bold move to return the famous Silver Arrows to the front of the pack for the first time since the 1930s, and that can only be exciting for Formula One.' - Tom Cary, The Telegraph

'Ross Brawn stands to make £100million profit in 12 months after Mercedez-Benz announced they are taking over the Brawn GP Formula One team.

'Mercedes-Benz will head up their own team next season after taking a 75.1 per cent share in the British-based constructors.

'Team principal Brawn, who paid Honda just one euro for the team a year ago, will remain in his role.

'The team will become known as Mercedes Grand Prix, with Brawn in control, while Mercedes-Benz Motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug will work with the F1 team and the engine team of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines.

'As part of the deal, Mercedes' parent company Daimler AG relinquished their 40 per cent stake in McLaren, but will remain their engine suppliers for the next six seasons.' - The Daily Mail

'The £1 Ross Brawn paid to take over Honda produced returns as spectacular as his team when Mercedes took control yesterday.

'Not only did it confirm his own fortune, it guaranteed the jobs of a 400-strong workforce for the long-term future in a deal which will cost Mercedes-Benz a bargain £200million.

'Brawn, who retains 25 per cent with chief executive Nick Fry, was bought out for £100m, with the other half of the money headed to McLaren in engines and funding until 2015.' - Bob McKenzie, The Daily Express

Mercedes' 2010 lineup to 'surprise' - Haug
http://www.motorsport.com

Norbert Haug has passed up an opportunity to clearly rule out speculation that Michael Schumacher is set to make a sensational return to full time Formula One racing.

Amid intense speculation that the almost 41-year-old will join Nico Rosberg in an all-German 2010 lineup for Mercedes GP, the marque's competition director said: "You might be surprised.

"I'm pretty sure you and your readers will like our choice," Haug told Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

When asked specifically about the Schumacher rumours, he added: "There is always speculation in this sport, especially when cockpits have not yet been filled.

"And there are dreams, and that's a good thing. Fulfilling these dreams is another thing."

When told by the Sunday newspaper
that German fans are expecting a German superteam, Haug added: "You seem to know more than I do. And with all due respect, I don't think so."

Haug was also asked about rumours linking Adrian Sutil with a Mercedes seat, and he answered: "We have agreed confidentiality with all the drivers with whom we are speaking."

Also on Sunday, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone played down the prospect of a return for Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of the sport.

"It's most unlikely," he said on BBC radio Five Live's Sportsweek. "I don't see any reason why he should (return) and I have not heard anything at all.

"I would be very doubtful," the 79-year-old added.

Schumacher's official spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said: "There are no negotiations going on."

Merc also open to non-driving role for Schumacher - report
http://www.motorsport.com

As well as offering Michael Schumacher the race seat alongside Nico Rosberg for 2010, Mercedes GP would also grant the seven time world champion a role of his choosing, according to a report in the Mirror.

The Brackley based team is "open to discussion on a variety of other" jobs for the 40-year-old German "whether in the cockpit, management or as a roving ambassador and advisor", the report said.

Schumacher, who retired in 2006 but almost returned to replace the injured Felipe Massa this season, is currently contracted as a consultant to Ferrari through 2012.

Brawn again plays down Schumacher rumours
http://www.motorsport.com

In the face of ever-mounting speculation, Ross Brawn has once again moved to play down suggestions that Michael Schumacher is set to return to F1 next year with Mercedes GP.

Fellow team chiefs Norbert Haug and Nick Fry added fuel to the fire on Monday by declining to echo Brawn's earlier rejection of the 40-year-old German's reported link to the Brackley squad.

"I spoke with Michael about his plans over a beer in Abu Dhabi," Briton Brawn, 55, told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

"He told me he would have only made a temporary comeback with Ferrari. We are looking for a long-term condition. So I don't think we are going to be together," he added.

Nevertheless, other figures are not reinforcing Brawn's attempts to quieten the rumours. Schumacher's manager Willi Weber, for instance, is quoted by rtl.de as playing down the former seven time world champion's neck injury.

"I recently spoke with (Schumacher's doctor) Dr Peil. He said Michael is making good progress with his recovery. He is very content," Weber added.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais referred this week to Schumacher's media "omnipresence" since his retirement in 2006, and Mercedes' Norbert Haug did not disagree that the latest rumours make for good PR.

"If you can have good stories every week it is good," the German admitted, after new world champion Jenson Button defected to McLaren.

Rosberg deal done before Merc takeover - Fry
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com

Even if Mercedes had not bought Brawn, Nico Rosberg would have switched to the Brackley based team for 2010, chief executive Nick Fry insists.

The 24-year-old former Williams driver on Monday was revealed as the newly renamed Mercedes GP's first signing for next season.

But it has been rumoured for months that Rosberg, 24, is heading to Brawn, and Fry confirmed that the talks had been held during the 2009 season.

"Nico was due to join Brawn under any circumstance," he told reporters, amid suggestions Rosberg's signing is an early indication about the influence to be exerted by the team's new owners.

"We are extremely pleased that the circumstances have worked out as they have done but the negotiation was done principally with the Brawn team and myself and Ross (Brawn)," added Fry.

Some insiders regard Nick Heidfeld as the most likely choice to become German compatriot Rosberg's teammate, but also linked with the second seat are Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.

Robert Kubica may also be a possibility, depending on the outcome of Renault's current deliberations about its commitment to F1.

Mercedes hopes to confirm line-up by Christmas
http://www.gpupdate.net

Mercedes Grand Prix is planning to have fully confirmed its 2010 race team before Christmas. With Nico Rosberg moving to the silver arrows from Williams, fellow countryman Nick Heidfeld is largely tipped as the most likely candidate to join him.

As Brawn becomes the Mercedes works team after just a single season under its previous guise, team CEO Nick Fry would like to see German Rosberg's team-mate named publically on this side of the yuletide break.

"It obviously would have been ideal to announce them together but that's impossible," the Englishman began, with one theory being that the Stuttgart squad is waiting to discover the plans of Qadbak, owners of Hinwil's Sauber, the team Heidfeld was contracted to for 2009.

"We don't have huge time pressure at the moment but once one goes beyond Christmas and into the New Year it becomes slightly more difficult, with seat fits in time for the engineers to talk to the driver," Fry continued. "I would hope to do it before Christmas, purely for logistical reasons."
