MERCEDES GP
Everything's not rosy at title-winning Brawn
http://www.planetf1.com

They may have just wrapped up the double in their debut season, but all is not well in the Brawn GP camp, according to a report.
Jenson Button sealed his maiden Drivers' Championship in Brazil on Sunday while the team won the Constructors' trophy in their first year under the
Brawn banner.
The Briton's though is yet to sign a new deal with the team for the 2010 season and he is unhappy with the offer on the table as it's "only
marginally higher" than his current deal.
Button is apparently not the only one unhappy at Brawn and morale among staff at the Brackley factory is not what it should be for a team who just won
two trophies.
The Telegraph claims that 'Button is not the only malcontent. A number of senior engineering staff are said to be upset over bonus arrangements.
'News of the discontent at Brawn has filtered down the pit lane prompting rival teams, including Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari, to attempt to lure
the top brains behind the championship-winning car with lucrative job offers.'
Brawn chief executive Nick Fry, though, insists he is unaware of any unhappiness in the camp.
"No one has said anything to me about this," Fry told the paper. "I am extremely surprised. We will look into any concerns that people have, though
I am not aware of any. As far as we are concerned these are internal matters but if there is an issue with anybody we are quite happy to talk to them
about it.
"Salary negotiation is not something we do in public. However I will say that any and all contractual bonuses will of course be paid. We will be
sitting down with Jenson after Abu Dhabi to discuss his contract."

Engineering staff upset with Brawn bosses - report
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com
Brawn chief executive Nick Fry has played down reports that a number of senior engineering staff are upset with the team over "bonus arrangements",
according to the Daily Telegraph.
The rumours are said to have spread in the paddock, leading to rival teams including Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari making job offers to the
disgruntled Brawn staff.
Also reportedly at odds with Brawn over pay issues is the new world champion Jenson Button, who agreed to slash his retainer by 80 per cent in
2009.
The 29-year-old also made it known this week that he paid his own travel costs this season, and the Telegraph reveals that Button washed his own
overalls between races, only to have Brawn's accounts department refuse to pay the bills.
"No one has said anything to me about this," said Fry. "I am extremely surprised. We will look into any concerns that people have, though I am not
aware of any.
"As far as we are concerned these are internal matters but if there is an issue with anybody we are quite happy to talk to them about it," he added.

'Pure-Mercedes' name for Brawn turned down
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com
One proposed alternative name for the Brawn GP team in 2009 was vetoed because it risked overstating its relationship with engine supplier
Mercedes.
In the wake of the management buyout after former owner Honda's withdrawal, the Brackley outfit considered reviving the Tyrrell name, while Ross
Brawn preferred the moniker 'Pure Racing' over naming the team after himself.
"There were several options," he said in an interview published by Italy's La Stampa.
"Pure Racing appealed to me, but our engine was Mercedes and therefore we would have been 'Pure-Mercedes'," he added.
Ironically, during the course of the season as Brawn GP, the team's relationship with Mercedes flourished, and it is now rumoured that a 75 per cent
buyout is on the cards.

Button 'almost' drove for free in '09 - Brawn
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com
Team boss Ross Brawn has dropped a strong hint that Jenson Button can expect some sort of pay-rise before returning as world champion to the wheel of
a Brawn car in 2010.
The two sides are currently at odds over the size of 29-year-old Button's retainer, after the British driver agreed to slash his contracted Honda fee
from $13m to just $5m this year.
In an interview published by Italy's La Stampa, Brawn was asked whether he thinks Button - following the Honda withdrawal and the struggle to arrange
a management buyout for a single symbolic pound - would have driven for no pay in 2009.
"He almost did: this year he agreed to take less than half (his contracted fee) because he risked being unemployed," Brawn is quoted as saying.
Given Brawn's admission that Button's 2009 retainer equated to "almost" driving for free, a pay-rise for 2010 is therefore very likely.
Britain's Daily Telegraph, however, paints a more complicated picture, with Button's morale portrayed as "low" over the issue, and the new world
champion having received "offers from more than one grid rival".

Branson in no rush to make Brawn decision
http://www.planetf1.com

Sir Richard Branson will decide after the final race of the Formula One season whether his Virgin Group will continue as a sponsor of the victorious
Brawn GP team.
Virgin agreed to sponsor the team just before the season began in March, just weeks after Brawn had secured their survival in the wake of Honda's
decision to pull out of the sport.
The decision paid off as Jenson Button took the drivers' championship for Brawn, with his efforts and those of team-mate Rubens Barrichello also
enough to take the constructors' title.
The season concludes on November 1 in Abu Dhabi, and Branson said on Wednesday that Virgin would consider whether to renew their deal for next season
and beyond.
He told BBC Radio Five Live: "It was the perfect relationship. Virgin loves to support an underdog but they are now one of the most expensive teams
out there and certainly not underdogs any more.
"But we will make an announcement in the next month but at the moment we just want to celebrate a magnificent season with the Brawn team, Jenson and
Rubens Barrichello, who did fantastically also.
"We were absolutely delighted to get involved with them when they didn't have any money before the Melbourne race.
"It enabled them to prove that they had a great car and great drivers and they've obviously gone on to fantastic things."
The team's success has come as a pleasant surprise to Branson, who added: "I don't think in our wildest dreams we thought this would happen. I knew
they had a good car, as I happened to know one of the test drivers.
"But when I got on a plane to Melbourne with some Virgin stickers in my bag, having just shaken hands and given them some money, the last thing I
expected was a first and second in the championship race."

Ecclestone slams Brawn amid Button dispute
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com
Bernie Ecclestone has hit out at Brawn GP for not sewing up a deal with F1's new world champion Jenson Button.
Button, 29, has expressed his desire to stay with the Brackley squad in 2010, but is holding out for a return to the salary he was contracted to
receive this year: about $13m.
To aid the Honda management buyout, the Briton agreed to slash his pay to about $5m, and also paid for most of his own travel and even laundry
cleaning bills throughout his winning campaign.
So far, Brawn chiefs Ross Brawn and Nick Fry are refusing to accept Button's demands.
"They are being a little bit arrogant considering how long they have been in Formula One," said Ecclestone, the sport's chief executive.
"They should remember they have only been in the sport 10 minutes really," he is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
Button's manager Richard Goddard agrees that the situation, now spreading into rumours of a high-income switch to McLaren, is entirely Brawn's
fault.
"A lot of quality seats may still be available so it's down to Brawn to make us an offer," The Sun newspaper quotes him as saying.

Brawn: We want Jenson to stay
http://www.gpupdate.net

With rumours circulating of new World Champion Jenson Button joining Lewis Hamilton at McLaren in 2010, Brawn GP Team Principal Ross Brawn is
forthright in saying that he hopes the Englishman extends his contract with the team ahead of his season of title defence.
With Button's management having already expressed his desire to stay put, Lewis Hamilton has commented that he would welcome his compatriot as a
team-mate, should a move to McLaren be made. "Jenson's obviously a great driver and for those teams without their full compliment of drivers he has
got to be a target," Brawn said to the BBC.
"We want Jenson to stay in the team and I think we will find a solution. Jenson has a contract with us but of course that contract is not the salary
of a World Champion and not the salary of a team that is now in a much stronger position than it was ten months ago."
With Button having taken a £5m pay cut to £3m for his crowning campaign, Brawn stresses that the two parties are searching for 'middle ground'. "We
are working with Jenson to find a balance between what we can afford, what he feels is fair for his status and what he can contribute in the future,"
Ross continued. "You are never 100 percent (sure of an outcome) but I would say 99 percent.
Brawn believes that an agreement should be met no later than a fortnight after next weekend's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Brawn unlikely to match Button's salary demands
http://www.planetf1.com

Jenson Button's contract negotiations has taken a new twist with team principal Ross Brawn suggesting they are unlikely to match his salary
demands.
Newly crowned World Champion Button is looking for a big increase after taking a pay cut at the start of the year following the demise of Honda.
However, his bosses at Brawn are yet to match his demands and McLaren are reportedly ready to pounce should the negotiations end in deadlock.
Team boss Brawn, who recently stated that he is "99 per cent certain" that the Englishman will stay, hinted that they will probably offer him more
freedom to negotiate his own sponsorship deals instead of giving him a contract worth more than £6m a year.
"We can offer a higher proportion of driver freedom and that will probably be the route we will go," Brawn is quoted in The Guardian.
"Jenson has some freedom for his own endorsements but has a commitment to meet our obligations."

Brawn/Mercedes deal to be announced this week
By Motorsport.com/GMM http://www.motorsport.com
A major new collaboration between Brawn and Mercedes-Benz is expected to be announced officially this week.
It has been rumoured and reported for some time that the German carmaker wants to step back from its long association with McLaren in order to buy a
larger share of Brawn.
According to speculation, the deal could see Brawn renamed Mercedes and race with silver cars in 2010, even though McLaren's contract with the marque
through to 2011 will likely runs its course.
Mercedes is reportedly keen on the deal because it will cost less than the McLaren collaboration in the long term, but give it a stronger voice on
matters such as driver choice.
The Mirror newspaper said an announcement is "only days" away, the Daily Mail carried similar information about Brawn being "taken over by Mercedes
this week".
Similarly, Martin Brundle wrote in his Sunday Times column: "This week it will be announced that Mercedes-Benz has sold its shareholding in McLaren
and will be taking a majority stake in Brawn GP."
